YPENBURG The dutch government decided with the VINEX-Program to built ca.750.000 apartments between 1995 and 2015. These newly invented "compact cities" are supposed to lower the traffic and to avoid unnecessary mobility. To achieve this aim spots were chosen which strategically were situated close to existing city centres and could be connected easily to existing road infrastructure. Another aspect was the social structure of these artificial cities. Key percentages for the amount of private houses as well as rental dwellings for different prices were fixed for the whole country.

Ypenburg situated between Den Haag, Delft and Rotterdam is a good example for these new town planning projects. On a former airport site Frits Palmboom (IJburg) developed a master plan with 12.000 dwellings. These are split into five so called "theme districts". Urban villas referring to the Amsterdam School and 19th century housing blocs are to be found as well as current experimental fun architecture of MVRDV and Bosch Architects.
